In particular the parent company G.M. Leather S.p.A. and its wholly-owned subsidiary SNAM S.r.l., take care of the procurement of raw materials (raw bovine hides and semi-processed leather, the so-called «wet blue») and of marketing both the raw materials and the finished product, while the production chain of the tanning industry is controlled both trough the wholly-owned Genesi S.r.l. subsidiary, which deals with the more value-added and customised processes (retanning, dyeing, finishing, quality control), and through long-established relations with a number of partners active in the district in the more standardised processing activities (preliminary leather processing and tanning/finishing).
The Group, by means of intense production, sales and research & development activities, acts as a partner for leading international and Italian customers such as distributors and brands operating in the furnishing, fashion and leather goods sectors, demonstrating its ability to anticipate both trends and reference market demands, as well as to develop and customise products according to customer specifications, with the delivery of the finished product within highly competitive deadlines.
The Marcigaglia family established SNAM S.r.l., which originally operated in leather processing for third parties (in particular toggling and embossing).
In order to sustain production capacity, to increase turnover and achieve economies of scale, four new roto-machines were implemented and two new large-platen presses installed.
The Marcigaglia family, in particular Carmen Marcigaglia, established G.M. S.r.l., today G.M. Leather S.p.A. focusing its operations on the marketing of both raw hides and semi-finished and finished leathers, outsourcing processing to subcontractors.
G.M. succeeded in positioning itself as a partner for important distributors and furniture brands with a strong international connotation and presence.
SNAM's processing business was sold, which focused instead on the marketing of Wet Blue (semi-finished) leather.
With the aim of having greater control over the leather production chain, the Group decided to integrate upstream by internalising certain processing operations with greater added value, margins and customisation, responding more quickly and effectively to customer and market demands. The company GENESI S.r.l. was established for this purpose, which, thanks to strong customer demand, already managed to break even in 2018 after one year of operation.
The Group, interpreting and anticipating market demands, decided to invest in a structured manner in Research & Development, offering more and more samples and products to customers, with highly competitive timing, quality and prices. As a result, strategic industrial partnerships were created with customers entrusting the Group with product development and customisation.
The Group's ownership and management, thanks to their long-running expertise in the sector, developed an on-demand supply chain management capability based on the optimisation of warehouse/stock management and in-house production management, which in the unfavourable market situation of the first half of 2020, linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, allowed them to purchase raw hides and semi-processed leather, the so-called “wet blue” at highly competitive prices, which were used in the second half of 2020 and in 2021 for both direct marketing and the marketing of the finished product, thus succeeding in increasing the profitability of operations.
